BEWARE OF PHISHING!
"Phishing" is an Internet based scam aimed at acquiring sensitive personal and/or financial information through an email campaign or website that impersonates a legitimate organization.
Phishing as a Financial Institution
How to recognize: Any e-mail that looks like it's from a financial institution asking you to "update" or "validate" your account. The e-mail links to a bogus web site, that looks genuine, where personal information is handed over without a second thought.
What to do: DELETE THESE E-MAILS, Ukrainian Selfreliance MI FCU or any other financial institution would have no reason to request this information from you, either via phone or e-mail and we will NEVER change our policy on this.
Phishing as an Internet Service
How to recognize: A seemingly legitimate looking e-mail from an online service (eg., Yahoo!, AOL, Earthlink, PayPal, BestBuy.com and SonyStyle.com.) asking for your private information.
What to do: DELETE IMMEDIATELY, legitimate companies would never ask their customers for private information in an e-mail.
Phishing on Job Boards
How to recognize: Postings on sites like Monster.com that request your SSN or bank account information, insisting it is for their human resources department.
What to do: NEVER GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION ONLINE, ESPECIALLY YOUR PASSWORDS.
Always report "phishing" or "spoofed" e-mails to the following groups: Antiphisihing.com; and the Federal Trade Commission.
When reporting spoofed messages, always include the entire original email with its original header information intact; and notify the Internet Fraud Complaint Center of the FBI by filing a complaint on their web site. |
